Finding the Right Dress for the Right Shape

Wedding season is in full swing now. And brides from all over are searching for "The Dress". This can be a tough process because if you're like me, you don't know what dress looks best on you until you put it on. And trying on dress after dress can get annoying and disheartening.

Lucky for you, there are professionals out there who know what they are doing when it comes to pairing brides with their ideal dress. My Lady LIFERS and I spent some time at Catherine's Bridal Boutique to test owner Cathy Brown's eye. We are women of all different body types at Ideas in Motion Media and I thought that this would be a perfect way to showcase what dress fits what body type and why. Catherine picked out all of our dresses and below she gave her reasoning behind her decisions.

Brides-to-be - you can use this as a guideline to help you figure out what dress styles might fit you best without trying on a slew of gowns. Please remember that these are just suggestions. If you have your heart set on a certain style of dress, you go for it! It's your big day and you deserve to feel beautiful.

Liz - "Liz is tall and thin, very slightly pear-shaped," Catherine said. "She is was able to wear the long-waisted, fit and flare dress and the ballgown that I picked out for her. They both accentuated her curves because she has a small waist and a longer torso."

Shawn - "Being more petite, Shawn has a small and short waist. We put her in a lace ballgown that accentuated her bust and waist. We also added some high heels to give her a nice long look," Catherine said.

Paige - "We put Paige in a slim A-line dress because she is tall and slender. The dresses had sweetheart necklines to accentuate the bust and there were no lines on the dress so it didn't break her body up into sections but instead gave her a long look. When you add a belt or there is ruching on a dress it breaks the body into sections that draw the eyes to different places," Catherine explained. "Paige also has a long waist so a low-backed dress looked very elegant on her."

Jenny - "Jenny is very well-proportioned. She did very well in a fit and flare since she has a nice long waist. The first dress had asymmetrical ruching which brought in her waist and made her look nice and tall," Catherine said. "The second dress had a cut tulle skirt which was huge and she was able to pull that off with her shape. The dress had a dropped waist which went down just below her hips that showed off her long torso."

Maureen - "Maureen is pear-shaped so we chose dresses that would draw the eye upward. The first dress we chose had ruching that accentuated the bust and the skirt was more plain and it really brought in her waist which is small anyway," Catherine said. "The second dress was a dropped-waist A-line so it didn't hug around the hips and it brought in her waist and flared out nicely. That dress was fabulous on her."

Deanna - "Being pregnant we wanted to make her comfortable and to feel pretty so we chose dresses that were easy to wear," Catherine said. "The dresses that I chose accentuated the top and fit nicely over her midsection. There was ruching on the second dress she tried on which draws the eyes in different directions and the first one was a ballgown that stopped at the natural waist which was above her belly."

Cait - "Cait has a classic look. She's slightly pear-shaped but it's evened out on the top so I was able to put her in a lace gown with a high neck. This gave her a sophisticated look but it still stopped at her natural waist which is very small. The belt on the dress brought in her waist and showed off the bust with some beautiful lace and the full skirt hid her hips," Catherine said. "Her second dress was a very vintage-looking fit and flare with a low back. There was no ruching and it flared on the bottom to even out her look."
