Orson's Shadow
An ingenious tale of two Hollywood giants whose time in the spotlight had faded. By 1960, it had been a very long time since Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles had achieved their greatest successes, and each was struggling to return to their former glory. Hope arrives when legendary West End theatre critic Kenneth Tynan makes a startling proposition; he suggests that the two icons team up to produce Ionesco’s absurdist masterpiece Rhinoceros, with Welles as director and Olivier to star opposite his mistress, Joan Plowright. Based on actual events, Pendleton’s play crackles with absurdity as titanic personalities collide in this witty depiction of life, genius and the drama of theatre.
