When I walked into the FirstLight HomeCare of Northwest Indiana Senior Fair Saturday Morning, July 16th, I was warmly welcomed and asked if I needed a chair, or a free hot dog. This is the nature of FirstLight HomeCare, kind generous people providing exceptional homecare to seniors.
Senior-minded vendors, including: Avalon Springs, Alzheimer’s association, Dunes Hospice, Comforcare, Rittenhouse, McColly Real Estate, Zounds Hearing, Valpo Care and Rehab, and Attorney Green, met at FirstLight today to help seniors learn about how to better take care of temselves in areas including hearing, and heart attack and stroke awareness. The main focus of the fair, however, was to make seniors and families aware of the resources available to them in the community.
“I think this is a great opportunity for the community and our local non-profits and other companies that serve seniors to know what’s available to them and how to live a healthier life!” said John Costas, the Mayor of Valparaiso, who also sang and played guitar at the fair.

All the money collected by Vendors went to the Alzheimer’s Association, and The St. Agnes Center. The St. Agnes Center provides healthcare, medication administration, weight and blood pressure monitoring, monthly podiatry care, and other health services in a safe and nurturing environment, the Alzheimer’s Association works on a global, national and local level to enhance care and support for all those affected by Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
“We just want to spread awareness, today is mostly about information about seniors, we are supporting The Alzheimer’s association and St. Agnes center today.” said Michelle Alex, FirstLight employee. “We don’t just want seniors but also families to come and learn all about the information we have to offer”
Through this health fair I was made aware that it is extremely important for senior citizens to be made aware of the resources available to them, as well as their families. Many were made as they enjoyed a free hot dog, and listened to music. FirstLight certainly accomplished their mission, to provide exceptional care to loved ones.
