Bare Naked Ladies Help Kick Off “Forever Valpo” Campaign at Valparaiso University

The Forever Valpo campaign of Valparaiso University was unveiled to the public on September 23rd. It was a celebration among students, administration, alumni, and rock band Bare Naked Ladies under the strobes of the Athletic Recreation Center.

“It’s an opportunity to share with the campus what we’re doing and why,” said Kristen Knoerzer, Associated Director of Creative Services with Valparaiso University. “It’s not just a series of speeches. It’s an exciting moment.”

Forever Valpo was a fundraising campaign that aimed to raise $250 million over a period of five years. In the two years prior to its public exposure, it raised $135,628,640 from University Leadership gifts. The money raised would go to an endowment fund, which uses investments to generate more funds.

Andy Nunemaker, a co-chair of the campaign, talked about the history of scholarships. In the past, alumni funded them. By establishing an endowment fund, they can accept more students.

“Valpo is a special place,” he said. “The Valpo family has strong values and a higher moral compass. So imagine the joy when a student realizes they belong here.”

Bob Hansen, a co-chair and Valparaiso University alumnus, had a 35-year career that took him to four different continents.

forver-valpo-2016-5“We understand the positive experience that study abroad has been,” he said. “It’s preparing good people to do great things in a world that needs them. That is why we have established the Valpo Forever campaign. It’s going to take an investment from each of us to make a difference.”

Mark Heckler, Valparaiso University President, introduced the speakers and the band. He rallied the crowd. He reminded each of them, with a visual presentation, that their hearts all beat as one.

forver-valpo-2016-6“We’re at a pivotal moment with our faculty. In the next year, 50% will reach retirement. Universities with endowment funds are best able to support students and faculty. It is our turn to build upon their legacy and do the same for those who will follow us. Our success with this endowment campaign will forever impact Valpo U. Our success depends on the support of everyone. Every gift, every investment in Valpo’s future, is important.”
