Eight puppies are safe and sound as a result of the dedication of a group of committed and caring people, and a lot of luck.
The group had been watching and feeding the stray dog in Gary for a half a year. But attempts to catch her were not successful until Monday.
The female Pit Bull Terrier mix was taken to Lakeshore PAWS dog rescue in Valparaiso where it cowered down in a kennel. After noticing the girl having some potential health problems, she was taken to a veterinarian and it was learned she had had puppies just a few weeks earlier.
While no puppies were ever spotted with the dog, the group took mom back out after dark to where she was caught. They then began the challenge of finding the puppies.
After searching into the cold night, a rescuer heard a tiny growl coming from under an abandoned truck. He looked down into the filthy and foul smelling area and saw the first of what turned to be eight puppies.
The five females and three males were rounded up after some messy efforts and reunited with their mother. All are in the care of Lakeshore
