Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and disability in the U.S., and is gaining prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help educate the public on the importance of a quick response to symptoms, Community Healthcare System will host a virtual online presentation, “The Pathway of Stroke,” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 19.

Community Healthcare System specialists and leaders in the areas of stroke prevention, detection, treatment and recovery will lead you from the onset of stroke and treatment to rehabilitation and return to home. The presenters include:

  • Mark Simaga, MD, neurologist, medical director of the Primary Stroke Center at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart
  • Andrea DeLeo, DO, MSE, neurologist, medical director of the Primary Stroke Center at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago
  • Aamir Badruddin, MD, neuroendovascular neurologist, medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center and Neuroendovascular Services at Community Hospital in Munster
  • Thanzeela Mohideen, MD, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, medical director of the Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point

“Time is of the essence when it comes to stroke and FAST action is key,” says Jill Conner, APRN, stroke fair coordinator and administrative director of neuroscience and cerebrovascular services. “The key message for this year’s Virtual Stroke Fair is to identify the symptoms of stroke, act on them quickly and better understand the different treatments for stroke.”

Vouchers for free lipid profile, A1C glucose and blood pressure screenings at convenient outpatient locations in Northwest Indiana will be offered to the first 300 residents who register for and participate in the event. Advance registration is required. The online event also will offer fact sheets, videos and an opportunity to ask the presenters questions.

To register, call 219-836-3477 and receive a link that is used to view the online virtual Stroke Fair through your computer, tablet, iPad or Smartphone. You can also visit comhs.org/programs-and-events
