A brand new program and a first in Northwest Indiana pairs the expertise of cardiologists and oncologists at Northwest Health – Porter.
Cancer treatments can be complex and involve a number of treatment modalities that have contributed to improved cancer survival rates. However, some of the new forms of cancer treatment can cause cardiac disease or worsen preexisting heart issues. Common side effects of cancer treatments include high blood pressure, heart failure, or arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms).
Dr. Maya Kommineni, cardiologist and Medical Director of the new Cardio-Oncology program at Northwest Health – Porter said, “With this new program, cancer patients at risk for potential heart conditions will be monitored by a cardiologist to detect and treat issues early thus maximizing heart health during and after cancer treatment. A team of cardiologists and oncologists are working together to prevent, stop or reverse any cancer-related heart conditions in patients.”
At-risk patients will first undergo an initial assessment that may include a complete review of the patient’s medical history, a physical exam, heart testing such as an EKG or imaging tests such as an echocardiogram. The Cardio-Oncology program’s goal centers on cardiac care tailored to each patient’s needs and will be longitudinal through the cancer journey.
The new cardio-oncology program is being introduced at Northwest Health – Porter as an innovative partnership between cardiology and oncology to maximize patient care. The initial focus will be on breast cancer patients undergoing certain chemotherapy regiments and/or radiation and will soon expand to other forms of cancer and throughout the rest of the Northwest Health organization.
