The streets of Winamac shined brightly Saturday night as many gathered for the city's annual Electric Light Parade. The event is planned by a Chamber of Commerce committee and is paid for through Chamber funds and donations from business owners with the goal of promoting local businesses and connecting with the community From mayors to town representatives to county residents alike, all came together to celebrate the upcoming holiday with festive fun.
“I love everything about this parade, we had a great showing tonight. It was great to see all the smiling faces," said Amy Cantu, President of the Chamber of Commerce.
The parade illuminated the town as floats decked out in shining lights and decorations went about their route. The man of the night, Santa Claus, also made an appearance as he smiled and waved to all atop his float, the star on top to round off a merry time.
This year’s Winter Wonderland event also invited everyone to enjoy a variety of holiday activities both leading up to and after the parade itself. People could see the festive decorations displayed throughout town as they went on horse drawn wagon rides. Some last minute holiday shopping could be done at the many craft vendors present, or people could grab a tasty treat at a bake sale. A gingerbread contest was also held, followed by a live nativity as well as Christmas stories. Santa was also excited to visit and mingle with others once the parade concluded.
With so much going on, this event has become a staple in the Winamac and Pulaski County communities that people love coming to each year since its beginning to see what’s in store.
“I love seeing everyone celebrating Christmas, it’s a beautiful thing to see,” said Tyrus Gray, a licensed massage therapist that participated in the parade.
In addition to spreading holiday cheer, the event also greatly benefited local businesses in the area. Shops were invited to participate in the parade to connect with the community as well as gain exposure. Additionally, the parade draws in a large crowd each year. With so many in attendance, businesses love leaving their doors open for those near and far to visit while shopping small.
“During the parade, we were letting people know about our new massage business. This is very important for local businesses like us. Events like this show that people care about supporting the local businesses and this is a lot of fun for everyone to celebrate and get to know each other,” said Gray.
Whether supporting local businesses or getting in the Christmas spirit, it’s safe to say that this year’s parade was a major success. Many were amazed with the county’s holiday spectacle, and they all left holly and jolly ready to celebrate the holiday just a few short weeks away.
“This event encourages people in our community to shop locally when we have festivals downtown. It is an exciting time for the area leading into the upcoming holiday,” said Cantu.
