Crown Point Swears in Newest Firefighter

The Crown Point Fire Department swore in its newest firefighter on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

After the unveiling of the department’s new fire engine, Crown Point Mayor Pete Land swore in Brandi Chavero, badge No. 85.

Chavero was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, where she grew up as the second youngest in a family of six children.

Her journey began with a passion for art out of high school, but her career path evolved as she discovered a love for working with people. Chavero taught preschool before moving on to social work, bringing compassion and dedication to every role she took on.

In 2019, Chavero began pursuing a new direction, moving from Arizona to Indiana, where she earned her EMT certification. She later earned her medic and fire certifications. Through every step of this journey, Chavero has shown the courage and determination that makes her an ideal fit for this career, Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. said.

She is the 14th firefighter hired in the past year and the 18th under Mayor Land’s administration.

Chavero will be assigned to Turn 1 under the supervision of Battalion Chief Scott Abraham.
