Valparaiso University (VU) has proudly announced Andy Waddle as the 19th head football coach during a press conference at the ARC on Wednesday, December 11.

Brandon Vickrey, VU sports information director, kicked off the event welcoming Waddle, recognizing the passion he has for the game of football and shaping the lives of young people.

VU President Jose Padilla, who grew up in Ohio, then welcomed the two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, remarking on the incredible football tradition that small colleges the state has developed. 

"Ohio football is pure, the passion is strong, and the love of the game is high.  That is what Andy Waddle brings to this university," said Padilla.

Coach Waddle talked about the keys they were looking for in the search to lead this team

"Coach Waddle embodied these attributes and is a perfect fit for our institution. I am thrilled for the next chapter of Valpo Football under his leadership and I can't wait to see you all on Saturdays this fall at Browns field," said VU Director of Athletics Laurel Hosmer.

Coach Waddle began his remarks with an emotional tribute to the the team, coaches, and fans that built him to who he is today

"I want to take a minute to thank my Marietta family," he said. "Know that I will always be your coach and while I am a Beacon today, I'm always going to be a Pioneer in my heart as well."

Coach Waddle was clear and candid with the VU players and his commitment to them as they acclimate themselves to a new coach

"I know you didn't choose me. I know you chose someone else, but I chose you. I am excited to be here with you and excited to take this step and learn what kind of character you have," Coach Waddle said.

He stressed his foundational belief in the principle of FIGHT:

  • "The F is about being Fearless. Behind that fear is an awesome opportunity." 
  • "The I is about Integrity. Whatever outcome comes our way, will be the outcome we earned with our integrity." 
  • "G stands for Grit, and Grit is the pursuit of the long term goal that you will not touch today but you have to work for today."
  • "The H is Heart, and Heart stands for love and passion that we want to have for the game and pour ourselves into it, love each other, give everything you have to the things that you love."
  • "The T is toughness.  Toughness is about what does it take to break you, what challenge can defeat you, what can you withstand? Toughness is mental, it's physical, it's emotional, and I promise you I am going to coach tough men."
