On Sunday, January 19 from 2-4pm, parents and grandparents of young children are invited to bring their family to a special Open House to learn about the curriculum, to meet the instructors, and to take advantage of a special pre-registration discount. The Memorial Opera House classes offer an early introduction to The Arts through programs designed to ignite a passion for performance at an early age while introducing children to skill-building projects as enjoyable as they are educational.

The Miss Great Lakes and Miss Kankakee Valley Scholarship Pageants will be held Saturday, January 18th for any young woman ages 13-24 who live, work or attend school in the counties of Porter, La Porte, St. Joe, Fulton, Starke or Marshall Counties. The Miss GL/KV Scholarship Program is a preliminary to Miss Indiana and Miss America.

As a part of the week-long celebration, Valparaiso University will host community conversations, film screenings, a student coffee house, and a global communion service this weekend.

MasMedia 7, an independent production company, is proud to announce its production of “Fences,” a play by August Wilson. “Fences” is a story about Troy Maxson, a former baseball player in the Negro Leagues now reduced to collecting trash, who must deal with his headstrong football-player son and his wife, who reevaluates their marriage when Troy comes home with the baby he fathered with another woman.

Watercolor Class at the Chesterton Art Center
Dick Church will be offering a 6-week Beginning/Intermediate Watercolor Class at the Chesterton Art Center starting Friday, January 17 from 10-12. Dick will lead students through a variety of watercolor techniques - a perfect class for the first-time painter or a wonderful refresher for the mildly experienced.

Community Garden Raising Money
On January 19th, from 3 pm to 7 pm, the Portage Community Garden will host the 2nd Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser at Real Life Community Church along with co-sponsor Fazoli's. The dinner features your choice of spaghetti or fettuccine alfredo, breadsticks, salad, dessert, and a beverage.

Crown Point Community Theatre, in conjunction with the Lake County Courthouse Foundation and through special arrangement with the Ayn Rand Institute, presents Ayn Rand's suspenseful drama Night of January 16, presented at the historic Old Lake County Courthouse, opening Thursday, January 16, 2014.

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens Snowman Building Competition
Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is hosting a snowman building competition now through March 2, 2014. In order to participate, snowman entries must be built onsite at Taltree. The winner will receive a free one-year family membership which provides unlimited admittance to Taltree for two adults and all children under 17 years old plus four one-time complimentary passes.
