What’s recently happened?
When it comes to saving lives, the Morgan Township Volunteer Fire Department (MTVFD) knows how to handle the heat.
Founded in 1976, the MTVFD has been a vital part of the community for years and will be for many years to come.
The MTVFD responds to all fire and medical in the local area. Despite the tight community, the heroes at the MTVFD are greatly appreciated throughout the Region.
The station has inducted a few cadets; the newest and youngest on the force started earlier this year.
Matthew Scott began working for the department as a cadet firefighter in April. Scott has been working alongside other young cadets to retain certifications at the Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Foundation Center.
The MAAC Center was established in 2016 in partnership with the Indiana District 1 Firefighter Training Council. The facilities are used daily to train young and upcoming emergency service providers to better protect the communities they serve.
It is clear the MTVFD is reaching out to not only help those in need but to help build a better and safer future.
What’s coming up?
As the summer days are heating up, kids are readying their animals and ropes for the annual Porter County Fair.
Family and friends from around the county have been working hard to prepare food and fun for the week. 4-H students will be showing off their skills in the exhibit building where you can see projects from kids anywhere from grades three to 12.
The shows and fun are just around the corner, with everything from horse shows to acrobatic performances and back again. Kicking off the week on July 20, daily 4-H exhibits and shows start at 8 a.m. and continue into the afternoon.
For those who are more adventurous, rides and other fun activities start up at 1 p.m. every day of the fair.
Beyond friendly activities await rodeos and motor derbies in the grandstands for anyone to come watch. Performers and musicians are lining up to play for their fans, including Jon Pardi on the 20th, Jelly Roll the 21st, Zach Williams on the 22nd, and The Oak Ridge Boys the 23rd. Following the next night, horse and bull riding rodeos, super show truck pulling, motor cross, and mud drags will continue the rest of the week.
Community member spotlight:
Matthew Scott is a life-long Cherokee, going into his 13th and final year at Morgan Township schools.
Scott is more than an active student, being involved in baseball, volleyball, golf, and most prominently, the MTVFD.
Scott started his working days at the MTVFD back in April and is currently working as a cadet and student at the MAAC Center to retain his Fire One and Fire Two certifications.
Needless to say, Scott is giving his best day-in and day-out to help out his community, but he’s learned more than just discipline. The relationships built through the MTVFD are like no other.
“My favorite part about working for the department is the brotherhood that comes out of it and the ability to save lives,” said Scott.
Scott plans to stay with the department for as long as he can before he graduates and decides what to do next. As far as working for the MTVFD goes, Scott has found a multitude of learning opportunities and chances to build his horizon.
“The most rewarding thing about being a firefighter is being able to take someone’s worst day and make it ten times better,” said Scott.
The future of firefighting is looking bright knowing cadets like Scott are working to keep communities safe for years to come.
“I hope to see a bigger family and more people wanting to join the department so they can have the opportunities I had,” said Scott.
