On Sunday, May 4, Gloria Dei Mission and Immanuel Lutheran Church will host the annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration. The festivities will begin with an authentic homemade Mexican lunch from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm. Entertainment will be provided by the Gloria De Hispanic folkloric dance group. There will also be games for the children.
"Many people think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day," said Pastor Tomas Angon, Gloria De Mission. Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France during the Franco-Mexican War. "The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage," said Pastor Angon.
The family-friendly celebration will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, 1700 Monticello Park Drive in Valparaiso.
The event is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be accepted.
