A Northwest Indiana native, Bob Moulesong is an author with seven books published so far. He has been a freelance journalist for about 25 years, writing for newspapers and local magazines. Now, he has a contract with Pen It! Publications, a traditional publisher based out of Columbus, Indiana.
“In 2013 I started to take writing a little more serious. I was always a storyteller, whether it be making up bedtime stories for the kids or making up my own fiction,” said Moulesong. “I have published four picture books for ages two to six, two are mid-grade books for ages seven to eleven, and one is an anthology book for adults. The adult one is my darker side,” said Moulesong. “It’s like Black Mirror or Stranger Things. It’s more different than what I write for kids.”
Moulesong is inspired by people and by modern events. Books give people an escape from reality and they allow readers to get lost in another world.
All of his children’s books convey important messages. For example, Moulesong writes about backyard animals to teach kids valuable life lessons that they will encounter growing up.
“In one of my children’s books, a cat gets bullied by other cats because she is multicolored and the other cats are one color,” he explained. “In another book, I tackled profiling. There’s damage in the backyard of one of the characters and they are convinced this hawk caused it. They have never met the hawk or know him, but they already made those assumptions. It turns out there was a rat in the garden and the hawk was hunting the rat. The lesson is not judging a book by its cover.”
Moulesong wants to teach children to be accepting of their peers that they encounter at school. He wants to introduce them to the life lessons that value character and overall acceptance.
“Children are not born prejudiced, they are born open-minded. I thought that if I could put something good in front of them, it could help,” he explained.
Authors each have their own way of creating their work. For Moulesong, he outlines.
“I outline kids stories and adult books. I write what I want to accomplish and what I want to convey. I tend to leave plenty of room for the story to take me wherever I go. Some people wing it, but I learned that words count and that what you include is the most important. I am comfortable with structure,” he said.
Moulesong started reading at a young age and grew up in an era where social media wasn’t prevalent.
“Books took me to a whole other world. When you take that away, you realize you’re having more fun in the book than in the real world. Now people skim, where I like depth. Reading is depth,” said Moulesong.
Moulesong especially enjoys writing about people. He hopes that his books can convey the message that each person is good at heart.
“I like to find the good in everybody. In all of the different age groups, I like to write that there is good in everybody if you look for it...There’s so much negative in the world so I like to write about the good,” said Moulesong.
