A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Kathleen Gerber and Josh Gerber

Kathleen Gerber and Josh Gerber have devoted many years working at True North Stables. Josh Gerber grew up on the property of True North Stables, and he knew that by the time he was in college that he wanted to work in property management.

“I grew up on this property where we run True North Stables. I've always had some experience with horses. I went to school for property management and wildlife management, so it was kind of a natural fit for me,” said Josh Gerber.

Before working at True North Stables, Kathleen worked at West Chester Intermediate School as a fifth grade teacher. After Kathleen taught for five years, she decided to take a different route and work at True North Stables with her husband.

“My grandfather had horses while I was growing up, but I never was around them. But after I married Josh, I got hooked into being out in the barn and helping every once in a while. Then, after I had my son, I stepped away from teaching, and the opportunity for a part-time herd management position on the property was offered. It was a perfect opportunity for me to be able to gain more experience with the horses and work from home while raising my son,” said Kathleen Gerber.

While working at True North Stables, Kathleen Gerber gets to experience new things every day with the horses.

“Every day is different out here. We can plan as much as we would for how the day is going to go, but it doesn't always necessarily go that way. It's honestly really fun just to see each of the horses and their personalities really come through on a day-to-day basis. I taught for five years and obviously all of the kids in my classroom have their own personalities, and I look at this barn as my new classroom. All of these horses have their own personalities and certain ones get along with certain ones and some others don’t,” said Kathleen Gerber

Josh Gerber works a lot more with the property at True North Stables than with the horses. Even though he does not work with the horses as much, he still gets to experience fun things every day.

“Because I don't necessarily work with the horses as much as my wife or others do, I still get to experience a lot of different things with the kids. I really love to see the excitement on their face when they come out and catch a fish for the first time or when we're doing work in the garden and they're excited about seeing the plants grow,” said Josh Gerber.

Outside of working at True North Stables, both Kathleen Gerber and Josh Gerber like to enjoy time outdoors with their son.

“We like to spend some quiet time as a family on the property. We like to hike and enjoy the outdoors. It's very peaceful here,” said Kathleen Gerber.

Kathleen Gerber and Josh Gerber enjoy their jobs very much, no matter how hard the day can be.

“We really do enjoy our jobs. It's a lot of hard work, but it's very rewarding,” said Kathleen Gerber.
