A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Raphaella Peting

Raphaella Peting, currently works as the director of membership and marketing for the Valparaiso Family YMCA. Peting spent her early years in Northwest Indiana. During college, Petting studied abroad, spending a semester in Spain. This ignited a love for different cultures, and Peting spent many years traveling the world. In June of 2024, Petting and her son moved back to the Region, and have been living in Valparaiso, Indiana since.

Peting attended Purdue University, majoring in rhetorical advocacy. Throughout her life, she has held many careers within the communications sector. Peting has worked in graphic design, journalism, as a translator, and more.

“When I graduated, I first worked in the oil and gas industry in Houston,” said Peting. “I traveled, visiting places like Budapest, Amsterdam, and Buenos Aires. That sparked my love for international relations and cultural diversity. After my first job, I lived in Rio de Janeiro and ran my own venture there. Then I moved to a different part of Brazil where I worked in cultural arts, leading me to the local arts and dance studios.”

In her work with a variety of careers in the communications industry, Peting has always focused on the importance of education. When Peting and her son came back to Northwest Indiana, she cited her family and love of the community as to why. Peting was especially drawn to the YMCA for the stories of the members.

“The YMCA has many incredible programs,” said Peting. “I wanted to bring attention to the LIVESTRONG program, the human interest stories, and local nonprofits. I launched our first podcast episode because I wanted to push for community relations and share personal stories.”

In her role with the Valparaiso Family YMCA, Peting has discovered that her passion for people is just as important as her passion for cultural inclusivity and diversity. She enjoys having the opportunity to see the impact stories of community members and to help build a path to share these stories.

“I have found my passion for relation with people and the true interest of making sure they are heard,” said Peting. “What really drew me back to the Region is the feeling of family. I think that is displayed in the name of the YMCA: Valparaiso Family YMCA. Members and employees may be part of the business, but at the same time, everyone is willing to go the extra mile.”

Peting holds a track record for valuing community and solidarity and describes herself as a people-centered person. On top of her career, Peting is also a yoga instructor. She specializes in a therapeutic style, working mostly with patients who are diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Peting is grateful for the unexpected twists and turns her life has taken.

“Just let life happen,” said Peting. “What comes naturally is often more grand, more fulfilling for your heart than what you set out to do in the first place. Let go of expectation, open your heart, mind, and energy, and let the adventure come to you.”
