Allegius Credit Union collects for Toys for Tots

The holiday season is all about giving. Allegius Credit Union gives back to its clients year-round and extends that work during this important time of year.

Keeping with a long-standing tradition, Allegius’ banking locations will once again be Toys for Tots donation locations.

“Credit union members and members of the community are welcome to stop by and make a donation,” said John Figueroa, member development and marketing manager.

Finding opportunities to help others and be a vital part of our area is key to Allegius’ mission.

“First and foremost, credit unions are a community institution,” Figueroa said. “Allegius is always community-minded, and that means trying to support those who may be struggling or less fortunate.”

Allegius employees take such pride in this mission that Toys for Tots is a year-round event.

“Members of our staff take ownership of this project,” said Figueroa. “For example, one employee started shopping for toys back in July.”

Allegius employees use sales throughout the year and keep an eye on the most desired toys to support Toys for Tots.

Throughout its operations, Toys for Tots has delivered over 650 million toys to children throughout the nation. Allegius is proud to be a part of this work.

“Last year alone, Allegius and our members were able to donate 290 toys,” said Figueroa.

This year, Allegius has a donation box at its Michigan City and Hobart locations and is also accepting monetary donations for Toys for Tots.

“That way, if people want to donate toys directly, they can,” Figueroa said. “They can also make a donation for toys that will be purchased.”

Although Toys for Tots is only once a year, Figueroa believes this community mission is a key piece of Allegius’ success.

“Today, applying online and banking with your phone or computer has become the norm,” said Figueroa. “What most folks like about us is that we have those physical brick-and-mortar locations where you can stop in and come see us face to face.”

As a credit union, Allegius is all about connection.

Figueroa contends that these connections are so strong that members and staff form their own communities within each branch.

“We have members that get to know their loan representative or teller and come back just because of this one person here,” said Figueroa. “Each branch is almost like their own little family.”

To support the community, Allegius has events and opportunities throughout the year to lead a hand.

“We have selected Fridays where members of our staff can donate $5 to wear jeans,” Figueroa said. “Allegius then donates that money in addition to the money we raise internally.”

Toys and donations are currently being accepted at the Allegius Credit Union locations at 1015 E. US Highway 20 in Michigan City and 2027 East 37th Avenue branch in Hobart.

The last day to donate is Friday, December 15.
