BFMS Basketball Recap: 7th Grade B Tournament

Having been postponed for a week because of snow, the 8th grade “B” tourney finally took place here this Saturday, and any fan who ventured into Boucher’s bleachers was treated to several exciting games.

In the opening game, the Vikes started a bit lethargically but woke up enough to put Fegely away to make it to the championship game, facing Merrillville Pierce, who had defeated TJ in a very close game. In the championship game, Pierce was determined to avenge a loss to BF on Thursday and made the final minutes very exciting, but the Vikes held off the Pirates for a 2-point win to hoist the 1st place trophy. For the tourney, Michael Krutz tallied 13 points, followed by Neil Whitfield’s 14, and Jake Catarello’s 11. Neil and Michael also topped the charts under the glass, with Neil reeling in 13 rebounds.

Defensively, Jacob Bekelya came up big, especially in the championship game where he swiped 6 steals. But it was an overall team effort that carried the Vikes to victory. Both 8th grade “A” and “B” teams play Tuesday at Portage Fegely.  The boys 7th grade B team brought home the Championship Trophy Saturday by winning TJ's tournament.

In game #1, the Vikes beat Chesterton 35-25 in a game that was close throughout most of the contest.  Jake Pancek led the charge scoring 10 points and logging 6 steals.  Daniel Gholston was a beast on the boards pulling down 10 and contributing with 6 points.  Ryan Wexelberg came off the bench and sparked the team by scoring 5 points and grabbing 3 boards.  Rounding out the scoring was Kyle Kaminski 4, Eric Yiankes 4, Dan Wimberly 4 and Andrew Lehnen with 2.  Kaminski also dished out 4 assists and snagged 5 steals.  Lehnen picked up 3 assists and 3 steals.

By winning game #1, the Vikes were rewarded by gaining the opportunity to face off against their cross town rivals, TJ, for the ChampionshipTitle.  BF was victorious by beating TJ 36-27.  TJ was very pesky and proved to be a worthy opponent.  Daniel Gholston led the team with 8 points and 7 rebounds.  Eric Yiankes had a great game with 6 points and 5 rebounds.  Dominic Snemis hit a couple of key shots, one being a 3-point buzzer shot at the end of the 1st quarter.  Kyle Kaminski, Tony Carpenter and Dan Wimberly scored 4 points each.  Andrew Lehnen and Jacob Wallace chipped in 2 apiece.  Lehnen also led the team with 3 assists.

The B team now has a record of 15 & 2 entering their final week of the season.  Their last home game will be this Tuesday against Portage Fegely so don't miss out on the opportunity to root them on.  Good job boys, you should be proud of your accomplishments.
