Calling All Porter County Youth to Join 4-H

4-HIt’s time to enroll in 4-H for 2017. Online enrollment for 4-Hers and adult volunteers opens this Saturday, Oct. 1.

“Today’s 4-H program isn’t just about cows and cooking as it was when it was founded in the 1900s,” said Joan Grott, Purdue Extension – Porter County 4-H Educator. “Today’s 4-Hers have opportunities to explore traditional 4-H projects plus science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subject areas. In addition to learning subject skills, members learn valuable life skills that will serve them well in the future,” she said.

Across the country, young people experience 4-H through school and community clubs, in-school and after-school programs and 4-H camps. 4-H is a research-based experience that includes a mentor, a hands-on project and a meaningful leadership opportunity. 4-H reaches almost six million young people through a nationwide community of 100 public universities. More than 3,500 4-H professionals and 500,000 volunteers work with youth to deliver 4-H programs.

City Kids Do 4-H, Too
Kids involved in 4-H can choose from programs that suit their interests. STEM programs provide the opportunity to learn through fun, hands-on activities and projects. Healthy Living programs help 4-H youth learn how to lead lives that balance physical, mental and emotional health. 4-H citizenship programs empower young people to be well-informed citizens who are actively engaged in their communities and the world.

Porter County youth interested in 4-H participate in community-based 4-H clubs and have opportunities to attend various camps and workshops.

Open House receptions for prospective and returning members and adult volunteers will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Oct. 25 and Nov. 15 at the Porter County Extension office, Porter County Admin Building – suite 301, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso.
