”Camp Safari” was the theme for the recent Girl Scout Day Camp at Camp Butternut Springs in rural Valparaiso. Over 120 Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scouts from Valparaiso and surrounding communities spent a week learning about the cultures of Australia, India, South America, and Africa as well as typical camp activities such as learning how to cook over a fire, hiking, fishing, archery, canoeing, and making new friends.
Forty volunteers were also at camp during the week and helped the girls learn new skills for living in the out-of-doors. The week concluded with the traditional San Salvador torch ceremony with the addition of a ceremony to respectfully burn tattered US flags.
