CDL Training Offered at Ivy Tech Community College

Truck Driving careers are in high demand in Northwest Indiana and as a result there is a need to  increase the availability of skilled workers to fill vacancies in truck driving, to help our existing businesses expand, and to attract new businesses to the area. Ivy Tech Community College will be beginning fall and winter CDL training sessions September 14.

Raul Verduzco completed his CDL through Ivy Tech Community College in April 2009.

In 1990, carrying a commercial driver’s license became law in the state of Indiana for all truck drivers. Before that drivers were only required to carry a chauffeur’s license. Since then Indiana has become one of the toughest states in which to achieve a CDL. It is expected that between 30% and 35% of all current drivers will be retiring so, we’ve got to get qualified individuals trained and on the road.

Training takes about four weeks for people who attend Monday through Friday or ten weeks for those who attend Saturdays and Sundays. Interested persons must be at least 21 years of age. All candidates must submit to a drug screening, physical, possess a good driving record and be fluent in English. Students must pass a state final exam to graduate. Monday through Friday class sessions begin September 14, October 5, October 26, November 11 and December 7. Weekend sessions begin November 14.
