The City of La Porte’s annual Lakefest made its return this year. The weekend was filled with entertaining activities for families and kids of all ages. People throughout the Region gathered at Stone Lake Beach and Fox Park to enjoy all that La Porte had to offer.
“It’s important because it brings pride to our community and makes them feel proud that this is going on in their backyard,” Mayor Tom Dermody said. “They don’t have to go elsewhere to enjoy it.”
Lakefest kicked off this annual event on Friday night at Fox Park with live music, Futboleros, and a mountain bike group ride. This night was filled with smiling faces, loud laughs, and lighthearted fun that was felt throughout the evening.
“Attendees can expect a great atmosphere and a place to bring out their family to enjoy good music, food, and all that the city has to offer,” Dermody said.
The fun didn’t stop there. Saturday morning kicked off with a Bolt for the Heart 5K race where participants and spectators gathered to support a great cause. The day continued with many outdoor events and activities, including a volleyball tournament, a kids fun zone, a concert, fireworks, a venetian boat parade, and the AquaX Grand Prix.
Nothing says summer in the Region like watersports. The City of La Porte brought the heat with the AquaX Grand Prix. Water connoisseurs hit the water and made a splash throughout the day while people gathered along Stone Lake Beach, where cheers from the crowds could be heard throughout La Porte County.
“Any time we can get on the national map, and this year we are a national championship, we’re pretty excited about that,” Mark Schreiber said. “Over 200 racers will be here this year; that’s 200 people that we’re introducing to our community. I think they appreciate the hospitality that we give them here. It’s special for La Porte to be able to host this type of event.”
In normal fashion, Friday and Saturday are just the start of Lakefest. Sunday’s events include a car show, AquaX Grand Prix, a cornhole tournament, a Fiesta del Lago concert, and a kids nerf battle.
Naturally, Lakefest couldn’t be possible without contributions from local community members and businesses. Sponsorships from NIPSCO, Visit Michigan City, The City of La Porte, American Renolit, Purdue University Northwest, 1st Source Bank, General Insurance Services, Larson-Danielson Construction, and Northwest Health not only make this annual three day event possible, but they help build attraction to it each year as well.
Be sure to head out to Lakefest this weekend for events that are sure to be jam packed with fun all weekend!
