CoAction Celebrates VITA Volunteers Returning $2.5 Million to the Community

CoAction is thrilled to honor the dedication and hard work of its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program volunteers at the annual VITA Volunteer Recognition Luncheon today. The luncheon celebrates the profound impact these volunteers have made in 2024, returning an impressive $2,538,720 to citizens’ pockets, reinforcing the organization’s mission of helping people experiencing financial hardship find opportunities, resources, and respect.

Hosted at The Avalon Manor in Merrillville, the luncheon brings together remarkable individuals who have generously contributed their time and expertise to ensure that 2,928 individuals receive the tax refunds and credits they have earned.

Yvette Johnson, Financial Services Manager at CoAction, expressed sincere appreciation for the volunteers: “Our VITA volunteers embody the spirit of community service and commitment. Their efforts in 2024 have returned significant funds to our neighbors in Northwest Indiana and brought financial stability to many. Today, we honor their dedication and celebrate their invaluable contributions.”

CoAction’s VITA program has played a pivotal role in assisting individuals and families with their tax returns, ensuring that low- to moderate-income residents access essential tax credits and refunds. The volunteers’ meticulous work included:

– Assisting 357 Earned Income Credit (EIC) taxpayers , returning $596,314.
– Helping 37 Education Credit taxpayers , refunding $43,283.

The collective effort of 53 VITA volunteers, contributing 3,195 hours, has directly alleviated financial burdens and fostered economic growth within the community.

A long-standing VITA volunteer shared their experience: “Volunteering with the VITA program is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that our work directly impacts the lives of our neighbors by helping them secure vital tax refunds motivates us to continue this important service.”

As CoAction continues to champion the VITA program, the organization looks forward to expanding its reach and furthering its impact in the coming years. CoAction  envisions the people of Northwest Indiana flourishing regardless of income, ability, or age
