Blackbird Cafe Focuses on Food, Drink, Music, and Art

blackbird cafe, owned by local Valpo residents Daniel Cook and Mary Koselke, is focused on three basic things - serving great food and drinks made daily from scratch in their bakery/kitchen, giving artists a new venue in Valpo to show their work, and being a local spot for the latest trends in music, both local and touring artists. All of this leads to having the most eclectic cafe in Valparaiso.

At any given time, a trip to blackbird cafe will yield a special, multi-sensory experience. With a focus on highlighting the creative, blackbird changes art of its walls every 2 months, with exhibition openings for each artist to welcome them to the shop. About once a month, blackbird hosts a night of music - these are bands playing new, fresh music on the cutting edge. Both local bands and bands on nationwide tours are featured.
The food at blackbird café is homemade fresh on a daily basis. The café offers various options from scones and muffins to quiche, paninis, and sandwiches made with fresh ingredients, customizable to the customer’s desire. Click here to see the food menu.

Coffee and tea hold a significant place at blackbird - having the goal of offering the largest selection of loose leaf tea in Valparaiso, greens, blacks, whites and herbals are all available by the cup or by the ounce to take home and enjoy. blackbird blend, the darkest blend at the cafe, along with 5 other regular varieties of coffee are served daily. Hosting a party? Having a family get-together? Getting married? blackbird café offers catering services for parties of any size. Dan and Mary will meet with you beforehand to create a custom menu for your event, ensuring party perfection.

Not only does blackbird connect to the community through great food, art, and music, they recently offered a silly savings event, Mustache Day. Anyone who had a mustache received 10% off their order and anyone who wore a fake mustache received a free drink. Lots of people turned out for this discount day, exceeding the expectations of the café. “It’s amazing how the community got excited over such a silly idea,” stated Mary Koselke. blackbird hopes to host similar events in the future.
