Despite the COVID-19 pandemic impacting businesses around Northwest Indiana, Flanagin’s Bulk Mail Service never wavered from its mission of providing quality service while saving them money every step of the way. In 2020, the Valparaiso-based bulk mail company saved its customers over a million dollars.

Donna Flanagin, Owner of Flanagin’s Bulk Mail Service, has been calculating customers’ savings for the past five years. She and her team started this annual tradition in order to show their customers tangible evidence of the benefits they receive when they choose Flanagin’s for their bulk mail needs.

“We wanted customers to know exactly the benefits they were getting with us,” Flanagin said. “Customers don’t want to know what we made or what we saved, but rather the money they saved by using us for their bulk mail solutions. They didn’t always know the exact amount they save through us, so we wanted a way to show them how they benefited in the long run.”

Flanagin calculates the amount of money saved based on how much customers would have spent if they did the mailing themselves directly through the United States Postal Service. With Flanagin’s Bulk Mail Service’s technical knowledge of the USPS, the company is able to achieve a successful bulk mail campaign and save customers money in postage.

“It’s based on the price of first-class postage if they did the mailing themselves, as opposed to using our service and saving the money in postage,” Flanagin said. “For example, if they sent out 200 pieces of mail and used 55-cent stamps, the customer would pay around $110 to the post office. If they use our service, it would be around $56. All the savings we get through the post office, we pass on to the customer.”

“I generally say every year that it’s better to get someone else to do the mailing for you than to do it yourself,” she continued. “The mindset is usually that if they do it themselves, they will save money. It’s the opposite in this situation, so it’s a major win for customers.”

Every year, Flanagin’s goal is to reach a million dollars in money saved. While a more normal year has shown larger figures saved, Flanagin is equally proud of the work they did amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Like many other companies, we weren’t sure what was going to happen,” Flanagin said. “But we had incredible support from the community and had new customers use our service since they were unable to do the mailings themselves.”

“Everyone this year had to focus on how to survive,” Flanagin said. “For a lot of people who use bulk mail services, that was their connection, how they stayed connected to their customers. For nonprofits and people that live by donations, this was essential for them to survive and continue on.”
