From finance to family ties, Jack DeHaven wishes he had joined Oak Partners sooner

While Jack DeHaven has only been a wealth advisor on the retirement asset management team at Oak Partners for around 16 months, the staff at Oak Partners has felt like family for much longer. DeHaven describes Oak Partners as a familial firm, which comes as no surprise given that his connection dates all the way back to 2005 when his brother-in-law started working there before his wife also joined the firm in 2010.

Even prior to his connection with Oak Partners, DeHaven was interested in the world of finance, studying finance and economics at Indiana University Bloomington. He shared that he has been entrepreneurial for most of his life, dating back to early childhood.

“In grade school we had a marketplace where you ran your own business. You got to pick what business you started. We also had a stock competition. I’ve had an interest in the markets since then,” DeHaven said.

With this entrepreneurial interest, DeHaven went to work for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP for 15 years before landing at Oak Partners. DeHaven may have a mind for money, but since joining the staff at Oak Partners, he has also found a passion for the work he does every day to help clients.

“As much as I love the study of the markets and the economics component of the job, I truly value the relationships you build. Honestly, that is part of the reason why I wanted to get into this business,” DeHaven said. “I enjoy the hands-on relationships with the clients and the fulfillment you get in having more than that advisor relationship with clients. They become like family due in part to camaraderie built through the unique, numerous social events put on by Oak Partners.”

The plentiful social events that DeHaven has experienced before and during his employment at Oak Partners include shred days, golf outings, March Madness events, and waterpark visits.

As an avid golfer, DeHaven’s favorite Oak Partners event is the annual golf outing in September. The event gives clients the opportunity to bring a guest so advisors can meet those guests in a relaxed, social setting to enjoy a day full of golf as well as fun prizes at the end of the day.

All these events help to deepen relationships at Oak Partners, whether that is an advisor-to-advisor relationship, an advisor-to-client relationship, or even a client-to-client relationship.

“The relationships have been one of the great parts that made the job transition so satisfying. I often wonder why I didn’t make this move sooner,” DeHaven said. “We tell our clients, ‘We're not just your LPL Financial Advisors, think of us as your personal CFO.’ We're helping folks through issues that maybe aren't directly related to investing in the markets, but we’re helping them with starting a business, financing a vehicle, and planning a vacation.”
