Fall is here and school is back at Valparaiso High School (VHS). Friday night football is underway as VHS has started its season strong. The team has gone 4-2 in its last six games and are 3-1 in the Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC).
These last two weeks the team has beaten Chesterton High School and lost to Crown Point High School in back-to-back weeks, and are now on the road coming up against Merrillville High School looking to get back into the win column this week.
“We are a very young and talented team that still has some crinkles, but we are excited for the rest of the season,” said Demari Gordon, senior wide receiver.
VHS Viking football is looking to keep its season strong. Coming up, VHS plays Merrillville, Portage High School, and Lake Central High School to end its season. The team only has one home game left, and that is against Portage.
If you are looking for a place to watch the Vikings play at home, go to PC3 Media on Youtube. PC3 is streaming one more game this season against Portage on October 11.
Tune in at 6:45 p.m. for the pregame show and more on the Youtube page.

Staff spotlight:
Erin Strauss teaches Algebra 2 and Trigonometry at VHS.
“I really like teaching Algebra 2 and Trigonometry,” Strauss said. “I enjoy working out the problems - to me, it’s like a puzzle I’m trying to solve.”
Helping students and teaching them to work hard is really what motivates Strauss.
“My students motivate me! When a student works hard and then is happy that their hard work paid off with a good grade on a test, it makes me motivated to keep doing my best to help all of my students,” Strauss said.
Strauss’ favorite part about teaching is helping the kids learn and grow to become better
“My favorite part of teaching is working with kids,” Strauss said. “I love to help them learn and see the ‘lightbulb’ moment when they learn something new. I enjoy helping kids accomplish things, reach their potential, and build their confidence that they can learn and do new things.”
Strauss mentioned that the best part about teaching at VHS was the people, from the other staff members and students and even the administrators.
“I love the people I work with,” Strauss said. “The students, other teachers, and staff are what sets Valpo apart. I don’t think that you can find better teachers or administrators anywhere else. The students are awesome - sometimes adults like to complain about ‘kids these days,’ but they just need to come and see the great kids here and the positive things they are doing to know that our kids are pretty great!”
Student spotlight:
Junior Kellan Hosek is in his first year as the varsity quarterback.
“I feel the football team is very strong despite us having a young roster, I feel like we have developed quickly as a team and are gonna have a good future,” said Hosek.
Hosek feels strongly about this school year and football season. He is extremely ready for both.
“My favorite class this year is environmental science. I like my teacher a lot and have a few friends in that class. School has been going well and I am liking it a lot this year,” said Hosek.
VHS is looking forward to a great football season and is wishing Hosek good luck this season, next season, and beyond.
