Hospice Artisans Combine Talent and Heart to Raise $750K for Hospice of the Calumet Area over the years

Hospice Artisans Combine Talent and Heart to Raise $750K for Hospice of the Calumet Area over the years

For years, Hospice of the Calumet Area has been blessed by angels in its corner, including a group with a passion for art and philanthropy. The Hospice Artisans, a dedicated team of volunteers, host their annual Holiday Market to showcase elevated, carefully curated gift items, all handmade with love.

This year’s event, held on Nov. 9 at St. Maria Goretti Church in Dyer, attracted more than 700 shoppers, a testament to the community’s support for the mission. Since its inception, this initiative has raised over $750,000 to support Hospice of the Calumet Area in Munster, assisting patients and families during life’s most delicate moments.

“We are so honored to have such a talented team working together to help the mission of Hospice of the Calumet Area,” said Lydia Dershewitz, Hospice Artisans director. Reflecting on the group’s humble beginnings, she recalled, “I remember sitting in the office in the back hoping we would just sell $2,000 so we wouldn’t be totally embarrassed. Well, I can tell you we weren’t embarrassed, and we’ve made over $750,000 over the years.”

Art and Heart United

The Artisans' creations span various mediums, including fabric, paper, fiber, pottery, glass, knitting, ceramics, and woodwork. What unites their efforts is a shared purpose: to support the hospice mission.

Dershewitz, also a hospice volunteer at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence for over 20 years, cherishes the dual role she plays. “I love my work with the Artisans, especially working with patients and families because I see every week what we are doing matters. Our Cherishing Life philosophy is more than a tagline—it’s who we are and what we do every day,” she said.

What began as a small gathering of friends eager to use their talents for good has grown into a cherished community tradition. “I started making cards, a friend said she could knit, and we started talking to other friends. It grew in a careful fashion and became something so close to our hearts,” Dershewitz explained.

A Multigenerational Effort

Volunteers range in age from as young as eight to their 70s and beyond, each contributing unique skills. Whether crafting jewelry or woodworking, they ensure every item sold at the boutique is special. The boutique itself is a festive experience, complete with complimentary coffee and live flute and piano music.

Though the Holiday Market is their marquee event, the Artisans also sell their creations year-round at the South Shore Arts Gift Shop in Munster and Pals Nails and More, as well as at various regional events.

For those seeking specific items or wanting to support the cause, Dershewitz encourages contacting the hospice office at 219-922-2732 for assistance.

“There’s something magical about our group, and I think it’s because of why we’re doing this,” Dershewitz said. “It’s fun, but we always remember why we are always reminded of our Cherishing Life mission. I just love this group. We feel good about what we’re doing and have such respect for each other and the mission.”

Supporting Hospice Through Art

The Hospice Artisans embody the spirit of giving through their creativity, dedication, and love. Their contributions not only provide financial support but also spread awareness of the invaluable work Hospice of the Calumet Area does every day. Thanks to the Artisans and their supporters, the gift of compassion and care continues to shine brightly across the community.
