It’s Temperature Taking Time!

It’s funny how two ideas can collide in your mind and somehow, although they are very different, April-15-2010-1somehow, these divergent thoughts come together and meld. That’s what happened on Monday afternoon as I headed back to my office after teaching about reverence at mass in 5th grade religion and Mrs. Franz announced that we were all out of thermometer covers. Religion and thermometer covers—pretty divergent, but they came together.

What’s your religious temperature? How well do you listen to the readings or the homily when you attend mass? Oh, sure, we’ve all been in church and daydreamed: we have made mental lists of chores to be done, groceries to be brought, or whatever else popped into our heads. But, what’s your “normal” religious temperature? Are you lukewarm, average, or burning with devotion?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were as concerned about our spiritual health as we are with our physical health? Can you imagine asking in the same breath, “How’s your soul, and what about those tonsils of yours?” It seems incongruence, but spiritual health is just as important as physical health. Just like we all strive to be physically healthy, we should strive to become a better version of ourselves through religion. Take your religious temperature. Maybe it’s time for a dose of spiritual medicine.
