The first week in May will be Teacher Appreciation Week, a week in which our community can show how much it values our teachers. However, it is important to note the commitment our teachers make every day of every school year to each of our students. Our VCS teachers are good role models for our children. They are knowledgeable, possess a strong work ethic, and care about others. Our VCS teachers put in countless hours to assure they are comprehensively prepared each day to deliver instruction that is engaging and relevant. Our VCS teachers care about developing student self-esteem not only in the classroom, but also in extra-curricular activities. Students who have good self-esteem will maximize their skills and achieve at high levels.
As we consider the value educators play in the lives of our children, it is important to note how our educators could be potentially impacted by state legislation currently being debated in Indianapolis. In response to the potential ramifications of current legislation, the topic of our next Viking University has been changed from an operational focus to a legislative focus. The date of the next Viking University has also been changed to April 14 to accommodate school board member participation in the session. The session will be 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Ben Franklin Middle School Auditorium.
The goal of the session is to inform our citizens of key pieces of legislation that may impact public education. The latest versions of legislation specific to educational issues will be presented, and audience members will be invited to ask questions. Two key pieces of legislation to be presented will be charter schools and vouchers.
