Valparaiso University welcomed a new era of leadership in athletics with the appointment of Laurel Hosmer as the new Athletic Director. During a press conference at the Athletics-Recreation Center, President José Padilla introduced Hosmer with enthusiastic praise while sharing stories of her leadership qualities, dedication, and compelling vision for the future of Valparaiso University’s athletic department.
Padilla believes her previous experiences as an athlete will allow her to easily connect with Valparaiso University’s student-athletes on a personal level. Padilla expressed confidence that Hosmer’s energy and passion would elevate Valparaiso University's athletics programs to new heights, instilling a renewed sense of pride in the university and its community.
Hosmer’s philosophy is centered on the student-athlete experience, one she knows firsthand.
“I believe philanthropy has the power to bridge the gap between those who have and those who have not. It can truly transform the student-athlete experience,” Hosmer said. “My time as a student-athlete saved my life, changed my life, and gave me identity, confidence, and all the qualities we talk about when we discuss the impact of athletics: leadership, teamwork, the pursuit of excellence, and resilience in the face of failure.”
Valparaiso University's athletics department has long been an integral part of the university’s identity with successful programs like men's basketball, women's soccer, and football. Under Hosmer's leadership, there is optimism that these programs will continue to thrive and set new standards of excellence. Her vision includes strong support for the coaches, whom she calls the day-to-day champions for the school’s athletes, and she is determined to ensure that Valparaiso University’s athletics department becomes a catalyst for spirit, pride, and belonging throughout the university's community.
“I will work tirelessly to ensure that our department becomes a catalyst for spirit, pride, and belonging—not just for our student-athletes and alumni but for all of our students, faculty, staff, and the greater Valparaiso community,” Hosmer said.
For Hosmer, the role of an athletic director extends far beyond managing teams and games. She sees herself as a steward of the university’s values, ensuring that athletics is a powerful force for positive change.
“Athletics have the power to raise the profile of an institution,” she said. “I feel a deep responsibility to remain laser-focused on this mission.”
At the core of Hosmer’s leadership philosophy is service to others. She believes that stepping outside oneself and considering what others need is fundamental to both personal and professional success. Building relationships, fostering trust, and creating sustainable bonds are crucial to her vision for the future of Valparaiso University athletics.
As Hosmer steps into her new role, Valparaiso University stands on the brink of an exciting chapter in its athletic history. With her commitment to service, her personal experience as a student-athlete, and her dedication to creating strong relationships, Hosmer is ready to drive the department toward greater success.
