After sending three student-athletes to the 2018 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships back in March, the Calumet College of St. Joseph squad will send two more to represent their ranks. This time however, it will be in a much more pleasant climate. Both Olivia Askew (SR/Munster, Ind.) and Demetrius Banks (JR/Hazelcrest, Ill.) will set sail for Gulf Shores, Ala. early tomorrow morning to start preparations for their individual events at the 2018 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships taking place this Thursday through Saturday.
Askew, having been part of the trio that went to nationals two months ago, will have another shot at becoming an All-American, this time during her last meet as a collegiate athlete. While she finished 15th in the 400-meter dash Kansas, she will now take her best shot in the 200-meter dash. She ran a 24.87 back at the Crusader Open in late April, hitting the B-Standard in the process, and will look to become the second track All-American for the Wave this year when she competes on Thursday evening.
Representing the field side of things is junior Demetrius Banks, who will be participating in the high jump on Friday night. After a very close call at the same event that Askew qualified for nationals at, Banks reached the standard in his discipline just one week later at the CCAC Championships. While his official high for the season was the 2.02 meters punched his ticket, coaches have raved about his recent performances, believing that he two can come home as one of the best in the nation.
