Navigate design trends like an expert in the new year with AMA Design & Print

There was also some influence from the '70s and '80s. Psychedelic designs brought a new approach to nostalgia and were used in advertisements for concerts and other entertainment events.

Another major trend in design was a natural watercolor look. This was especially prevalent in product packaging on skincare, organic ingredients, and sustainable items. One goal of many brands was to create a more environmentally friendly feel, and the organic-looking products aimed to reflect that vision.

Color schemes of the '90s tended to lean in one direction or the other. There was a surge of bright, funky colors to match the mood of the era's influence. On the other hand, there was also a surge in the usage of more natural, toned-down looks. Light browns and greens were especially utilized on social media during the summer of 2021.

Bold typography was arguably the biggest design trend of 2021 and will likely continue into 2022. Large, flashy fonts were often mixed with sophisticated serif fonts, establishing a chaotic balance among both elements. This use of typography was prevalent in every form of design, and was often seen printed on billboards, posters, banners, and books.

In 2022, it seems the design world may shy away from bold, bright marketing. A heavy focus on typography will likely still dominate designs, but with a more minimalistic feel. The use of serifs and sans serifs in contrasting styles will still be a common design feature.

Color use will continue to shift as the seasons change, however the use of natural, muted colors will still be the base of many designs, especially in the cosmetic and dining world. Bold colors will continue to be used in marketing, but they may take on a more jewel-toned form. In the same way that design will become more minimalistic, color will become more simple and less bold. The Pantone color of the year, Very Peri, is a purple vibrant enough to demand attention, but muted enough to let other design elements shine through.
