Late last week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Valparaiso High School coaching Legend Virgil Sweet about his decades-long tenure of being the VHS boy’s basketball coach.
Sweet was Head Coach of the Vikings for 20 seasons, the most ever by a Viking head coach. His 296 career wins were the most ever by a Viking coach at the time of his retirement. His 14 sectional titles (in 20 years) were the most ever by a VHS coach. His teams also won six holiday tourney titles, tied for the most ever by a Viking coach. His sectional record of 51-6 (89%) gave him the most sectional wins in VHS history. His tenure as Vikings coach helped strengthen and continue the Vikings tradition of discipline and sportsmanship.
He was up in the area for the big game last weekend against Munster, along with the Hall of Fame ceremonies, so he decided to swing by for a chat! The interview was so good that we split it up into three parts and included them below.
