Purdue University North Central will begin an externship program this fall semester that will match students with area companies and non-profit organizations
which will give students an opportunity to shadow professionals in their field of interest and learn more about careers and the workplace.
The externships will be available to PNC students who have earned between 15 and 60 credit hours and have a grade-point-average of 2.5 or above. Students must also complete the Discover Program or Career Battery tests.
"Sponsoring businesses and organizations are currently needed to participate in the Externship Program," said Natalie Connors, director of PNC Career Development.
Sponsors will be selected based upon the opportunities they present that are related to the degree programs offered at PNC.
"The Externship will be used as a career exploration tool for our students," said Connors. "Students will gain exposure to what it is really like working day to day in a particular field, assistance in identifying critical skills, knowledge and preparation for their future career path and will build their network base of professionals. Sponsoring employers will have a unique opportunity to share their expertise with students, directly contribute to the quality of education in Northwest Indiana and play an integral role in the career development of a PNC student."
The actual externship will last from one to five days, which is based upon the employer's commitment and availability. The externship will give a student first-hand experience in the workplace, immersing them in a career field to learn different aspects of an industry before entering the work force. Students will speak with professionals in the field to discover how their academic program fits with the career and if their background and interests are an appropriate fit. Externships provide an opportunity for students to develop resources in the community and make career connections to begin establishing a professional network.
Sponsoring employers are asked to give the participating student a tour of the workplace and explain the overall structure of the company, plus detail a job's daily routines and responsibilities.
If possible, students will sit in on a meeting with a client, or work with an employee on a project.
