Founded in 1916, the Porter County Museum of History was originally displayed in the Valparaiso Public Library. During 1938 to 1974, the Museum moved to Room 411 in the Courthouse. In 1975, the Museum moved to its current location, the former Porter County jail and Sheriff's residence.
Plans are in place for the fourth home of the Museum, the old Valparaiso police station on Indiana Ave. Originally two buildings, they've both served many different purposes over the years. The limestone (right side) building was the original town hall location, fire station, and police station. In 1964, the building housed nearly every function of the city. They combined the buildings to accommodate the need for more room, giving its appearance today.
The plans for the new location will be fine tuned as planning continues. For now, the renderings provide an idea of what could be coming in the future for the Porter County Museum of History. In the meantime, be sure to check out the fascinating historical items at the Museum's current location, 153 Franklin St in Valparaiso, and stay up to date as the plans develop by following the Museum on Facebook!
