Porter County Public Compost Sites to Close for Season December 2, 2017

Compost-piles-compressedThe last day of the 2017 season for public access to the Valparaiso compost site, 2150 W. Lincolnway, and the Boone Grove compost site, 546 South 400 West, is Saturday, Dec. 2.

The Valparaiso site, owned and operated by the City of Valparaiso with assistance from Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction, will begin Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. off-season hours Jan. 6, 2018. All Porter County residents can use the site to recycle their once live Christmas trees, wreaths and other organic holiday waste.

The Saturday off-season hours will continue through March 24, 2018. The Boone Grove site, owned and operated by the district, will remain closed after Dec. 2, until the regular season begins. Both sites will open for the season on Monday, March 26, 2018.

Residents should remove plastic bags and other containers upon dropping off materials. Wood that has been treated or lumber is not accepted at either site.

Other materials accepted for recycling at the public compost sites include: electronics, household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs (tubes and CFLs), toner cartridges, and old media (CDs, DVDs, video games; no cassette or video tapes or anything with film).
