Local residents read aloud their personal essays of what they believe in for Porter-Starke's "The Inspiration Project", a community-wide launch of the internationally acclaimed program, This I Believe.
The Inspiration Project was developed when Porter-Starke asked itself, “How could we inspire our community?” The answer was simple: learn from the experiences of others.
Readers and audience members alike shared their thoughts and feelings about what they believe in. When asked what stood out in the essays to them the most, audience said they heard love, faith, and trust. Others mentioned compassion, empathy, and wisdom. The list went on, as other members of the audience said they heard sincerity, openness, commitment, hope, bravery, resilience, and loyalty. No matter what walk of life he or she came from, every reader was listened to intently.
When asked if they were moved after an evening of listening to the essays, an audience member said “We live in an amazing world.”
Another said, “This room is full of amazing people.” Not only did audience members express that they personally felt “renewed in strength” and “more powerful,” they also were amazed at the strength and trust it took for the readers to share their personal stories of belief with others.
Everyone had a chance to congratulate and talk with each other and enjoy some refreshments after the speeches.
One member of the audience said he thought, “every story had depth.”
The goal of the event was to gain something by listening to the experiences of others. Undoubtedly, every audience member left the event with something to think about.
