Purdue University Northwest Cuts the Ribbon on New Community Counseling Center in Hammond

On Thursday, Purdue University Northwest held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new Community Counseling Center on Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond. Before the building was transformed into a state of the art counseling center, it was home to a grocery store and furniture store. Now, it is home to Purdue University Northwest’s Community Counseling Center and Marriage and Family Therapy Center.

According to Purdue University Northwest’s website, many people feel overwhelmed, anxious, confused or frustrated. The Community Counseling Center provides a comfortable environment in which to discuss problems and possible solutions with quality, affordable, and culturally competent therapeutic services. The Community Counseling Center offers individual counseling for adults and children with concerns such as anxiety, depression, grief/loss, drugs/alcohol, sexual orientation, identity, trauma or coping skills for life events.

“We, as a university, are dedicated to the city of Hammond and the Northwest Indiana community,” said Thomas Keon, Chancellor of Purdue University Northwest. “Our dedication is part of our goal, not only culturally, but socially and economically.”

After the ribbon was cut by Chancellor Keon and other members associated with Purdue University Northwest, groups of people in attendance were able to tour the new facility. The walls of the center held state of the art technology to take therapy to the next level. There were conference rooms for licensed professionals and faculty to observe patients under the supervision of graduate candidates for the The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and Indiana Counselors Association on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (ICAADA). There were also beautiful therapy rooms full of artwork and items used to make a therapy session comfortable and simple.

“I think that this is a great day and an exciting addition to the University,” said Elaine Carey, Dean of the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. “Our work here is improving the life here in Northwest Indiana.”

After tours of the facility were over there were refreshments served in the lobby for everybody in attendance. Students, staff, faculty and alumni were able to enjoy and take pride in the newest addition to Purdue University Northwest.
