No matter what age you are, everyone can participate in the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating. The Rittenhouse Village at Valparaiso was a prime example of this as they held their annual trick-or-treat Halloween party on Tuesday.

“We hold this event every year as a way for our residents to stay connected with community activities,” said Natalie Reisen, the Marketing Director at Rittenhouse.

“We’ve got so many activities for the families that come, and I want to thank everyone that participates including our wonderful residents, staff, and the families that come to trick-or-treat. It’s a great experience for the young kids and also our elderly guests, who look forward to it every year,” she continued.

The costume clad children could be seen roaming the hallways stopping and getting different candies from the residents. Rittenhouse also had a spooky photo booth for guests and opportunities for winning candy and prizes from costume and coloring contests.

Brittany White of Valparaiso knew about the event from her employment there and was sharing in the Halloween spirit with her son.

“I think this is a great event for the kids and residents. Rittenhouse has a very welcoming environment that the kids feel right at home with,” she said. “The children bring an energy into here that I see lifts the spirits of our residents so I think that’s an amazing thing”.

Besides the candy handed out, there were also other treats for the guests including root beer floats, cider, and popcorn bars. The residents at Rittenhouse were also dressed appropriately for the holiday with light up pumpkin glasses and other Halloween garb.

Marlayna Belcher of Chesterton described the event as a safe way to beat the odds of Fall weather for her daughter Lexi.

“I thought this sounded much better than getting rained out in a week,” she joked. “This is just as good as going out to trick-or-treat to me and Lexi loves every second of it. It’s also awesome that the seniors get to participate too, you can really see the excitement of their faces.”
