The Valparaiso University Department of Athletics continued its tradition of excellence in the classroom as the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data on Tuesday.
Six Valpo programs posted perfect multi-year APR scores of 1000. The score measures eligibility and retention and provides a snapshot of academic success for each sport. Valpo tied for the most programs with perfect APR scores of any Missouri Valley Conference institution, as Drake and Belmont also had six programs apiece. This marks the third straight year Valpo has led the MVC (either tied or outright) in number of teams with perfect APR scores.
Men’s cross country, men’s swimming, men’s golf, women’s basketball, women’s cross country and tennis all earned perfect scores. Over the last three APR releases, Valpo has achieved 23 total perfect APR scores as nine programs accomplished the feat last year and eight the year prior. Bowling (994), women’s golf (993), women’s swimming (993), soccer (990), volleyball (989), men’s track & field (988), baseball (987) and softball (986) all boasted a multi-year APR of 980 or better, meaning 14 of Valpo’s 17 programs reached that threshold.
Each academic year, each Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student-athletes can earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. For sports/schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2019–2020, 2020–2021, 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 academic years.
