Events scheduled for the week of Oct. 18 also include a lively discussion on racial profiling 
The Indiana University Northwest School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), part of the College of Health and Human Services, will host its annual Criminal Justice Week this week, beginning today, Monday, Oct. 18. Events include a program on racial profiling, a session on interviewing skills, and the always-popular Career Day, when law-enforcement agencies and related organizations send representatives to campus to meet with students and prospective applicants. And, new this year is a mock crime scene where event attendees will be tasked with solving a crime.
Criminal Justice Week will kick-off with a discussion on Racial Profiling, held today, Monday, Oct. 18, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 2001 of Dunes Medical/Professional Building. The event, “Racial Profiling: Myth or Reality,” will be facilitated by SPEA Assistant Professor Jacqueline Huey, Ph.D. Students will present arguments of the myths versus realities of racial profiling and work towards answering, “Does racial profiling really exist?”
Individuals interested in the criminal justice profession should consider attending an Interviewing Skills Panel Discussion to take place tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. SPEA lecturer John Tsolakos will facilitate the discussion and provide attendees with insider tips on what employers are looking for in prospective employees. The panel discussion will also take place in Dunes Medical/Professional Building, Room 2001.
The annual Criminal Justice Career Day hosted by SPEA will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the Moraine Student Center. Numerous law-enforcement agencies and related organizations will send representatives to discuss with students and participating community members the career opportunities that are available. SPEA representatives will also be on hand to discuss academic programs with prospective students. Facilitators of the event include Sandra Hall Smith, SPEA Assistant to the Dean for Graduate Programs and Outreach, and the Criminal Justice Student Association.
The week will come to a close with a mock crime scene that will be solved by attendees. The event, entitled, “Do You Have What It Takes…To Crack the Case?,” will be led by facilitator and SPEA lecturer Joseph Guzik on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 1 p.m. The interactive event will be held in Room 2001 of the Dunes Medical/Professional Center. Campus members and the general public are invited, but only 60 people may participate. Reservations are required.
The Criminal Justice Student Association will also ask individuals to take the “No Texting Zone” pledge to encourage individuals to not drive and text. Pledge forms will be available at each event.
