The market for used vehicles is massive, with seemingly endless makes and models spread across any number of model years. For a vehicle to truly earn the title of Certified, it must pass a 172-point inspection and reconditioning process. The inspection runs through every facet of a vehicle's health and requires it to pass an extensive road test. Further, to qualify as Certified Pre-Owned, it must have less than a maximum of 75,000 miles, have been produced within the last five years, and have a clean title and history free of accidents.
“Other than getting a brand-new car, this is the highest quality and best guarantee that you can get,” said Billy Wicks, sales manager at Team Chevrolet of Valparaiso. “The last couple of cars that my wife and I purchased have been through that program. To us, it’s all about that peace of mind knowing that everything is going to work just like it’s brand new.”
Every Certified Pre-Owned vehicle from Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC also includes a pair of comprehensive warranties. First is a six-year/100,000-mile Extended Powertrain Limited Warranty, which also includes roadside assistance and courtesy transportation during the warranty period – all on a $0 deductible. Second is the Extended Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty for 12 months/12,000-miles, which covers a wide variety of incidental damage.
“A lot of times, that powertrain warranty is better than one that you’d get with a new car,” Wicks said. “It’s just an added benefit to help buyers feel more comfortable, and it also comes along with a few perks like a couple of free oil changes and tire rotations.”
Wicks said that when buyers talk to him about the Certified Pre-Owned program, most are surprised by the difference a title can make.
“I’ve seen it time and time again where people come in with a used car that they’ve purchased elsewhere, and they’re shocked when we tell them about the history of the vehicle including an accident,” he said. “With a Certified Pre-Owned, there are no unknowns. You know exactly what you’re getting, and there are no hidden surprises.”
Team Chevrolet is one of the only dealerships in the area that currently certifies all eligible vehicles to ensure they are protected by those additional warranties.
“There are a lot of dealerships that opt-out of its programs because it can cost them to get that certification,” he said. “Here at Team Chevy, we feel the value to our buyers far exceeds what it costs for us to get that certification. We want to give our customers the knowledge that they’re getting a nice, trustworthy vehicle.”
