Thomas Jefferson Elementary students participate in Socktober initiative

Thomas Jefferson Elementary Student Council joined millions of Americans with their participation in the nationwide Socktober initiative. Socktober is an initiative that encourages communities to collect donations of socks for their local homeless shelters.

One of the student council sponsors and first-grade teacher, Allison Van Oss said, “Last year, we had a goal of 300 pairs of socks and collected somewhere between 500-600.” This year the school collected 1,306 pairs of socks exceeding their goal of 1,000.

The socks collected by Thomas Jefferson Elementary will be donated to The Caring Place in Valparaiso. “We received their large donation last year and we used all of them,” said Mary Beth Schultz, President and CEO of The Caring Place. “Who doesn’t love a pair of warm and fuzzy socks especially in the winter.”
