VHS Jazz Band Swinging the Night Away at Aberdeen Manor

The Ballroom at Aberdeen Manor was the perfect place for the Valparaiso High School Jazz Bands to perform various “swinging” hits. This was the third year students and their instructors graced Aberdeen with their resounding talent and dedication to music.

Two conductors led the three VHS jazz bands (entry level, mid-level and top level) wondrously, keeping the room alive and moving. Miguel Rosario, Assistant Director of Bands, managed the entry level, while Daniel Pritchett, Director of Bands and Music, directed the mid and top level musicians. The jazz band instrumentalists are enthusiastic and faithful to their unending melodies and always strive to do their best.

“It’s pretty amazing because it’s all volunteer. They have to come in and rehearse twice a week after school. Some of our musicians are in a couple bands; as players or mentors. Younger players learn how to do what they need to and they recognize what it takes. It pulls in the body of jazz music and it’s just lovely. They all love it tremendously,” Vice President of the Valparaiso Band Parent Association Lisa Stressler said.

The attendance at Aberdeen Manor was roughly 370, with 300 individuals enjoying the VHS Jazz bands and 70 hardworking performers. The location and intent of the bands fit perfectly with the atmosphere; lights were dimmed low while the stage was lit up with joyful faces and everyone enjoyed light refreshments as the night continued.

“Aberdeen Manor opened their arms to us. They were so kind and generous with their time and effort so we could afford to be here. Our kids had the opportunity to really have an evening where they get to dress up and be professional musicians. It also is pretty nice for the adults to get out and dress up. You couldn’t ask for a nicer evening with a wonderful bunch of kids that are dedicated and talented; they give hope to humanity, that’s why we are here,” Stressler said.

Taylor Woods, who handles double duty in band and jazz, shared a little snippet of why she loves Valparaiso High School’s Jazz Band so much.

“I love jazz because it gives me something different to play; I love going to jazz because it’s a whole different style and a whole different experience each time,” she said. “Playing in regular band is prettier, but in jazz, it’s more loud and exciting.”

This was a truly wonderful and eye opening event that everyone should experience at least once in his or her life. Support your local talents and embrace the music.
