The Valparaiso Community Schools Summer Food Service Program is in full swing for summer 2018. The program offers free meals on weekdays to kids 18 and under at 4 locations in Valparaiso.
A new, outdoor location, Valplayso Park, has been added this summer to supplement the program’s growth over the years. The addition of Valplayso Park is projected to be a success as it is a summer staple for families in the area.
“We have really expanded the program” said Kathleen Kane, Director of School Nutrition for Valparaiso Community Schools, “because we know that hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.” Kane noted that in 2014, the first year of the program, close to 3800 meals were served and last year they exceeded 26,000 meals.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like Valparaiso Community Schools, to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. Anyone age 18 and under may come and eat.
Valparaiso Community Schools administration and staff are committed to providing exemplary education to over 6,000 students. Parents and community members are invited to join VCS in their commitment to students and the Valparaiso community. Upcoming events can be found on www.Valpo.k12.in.us.
