A Message from President José Padilla:
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Connie Bretscher, our oldest alumna, who left us peacefully on Sunday, January 19 at the remarkable age of 104. Connie was a beloved member of the Valparaiso University family, having graduated in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in music and later earning her master’s degree in education in 1971. She remained a dedicated alumna and pillar of the campus community until her final days.
Throughout her extraordinary life, Connie embodied the spirit of Valparaiso University — a commitment to learning, service, and resilience. She spoke fondly of her time on campus, recounting stories of friendships, challenges, and triumphs that shaped her life and inspired those around her. Her incredible story of faith, music, and service can be found on the alumni website here.
Connie was a lifelong student, a cherished mentor, a selfless volunteer, a dedicated community member, and a supporter of all things Valpo. She could be found on campus taking music lessons and language classes into her 90s and cheering for Valpo athletics as a season ticket holder for nearly 60 years. Connie’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
We share details of the arrangements to honor Connie’s remarkable life as soon as they are finalized.
During this time of reflection, let us celebrate Connie’s incredible journey and the indelible mark she has left on our campus community.
