VHS Choirs Entertain Elementary Students

Two out of the five choirs at Valparaiso High School hosted a fabulous and entertaining concert for elementary students in the Valpo school district in grades 3-5 this past Thursday and Friday. Prior to the concert, the students arrived to VHS with much anticipation to see the show as well as the opportunity to see the "big kids" in the hallways of the high school. The Varsity Singers and Concert Choir put on an eclectic and creative show alongside their beloved and energetic choir director, Linda Schonbachler. The Young People's Concerts as they're aptly named has been an annual event for the past few years and this year; it was the choirs' turn. The theme was simple. Music + Words = Song!

"It's to be a learning situation where [the students] learn that songs are important in our culture and an important part of our lives," stated Schonbachler.

The songs performed ranged from ancient Christian chants to the official song for the 2010 World Cup, named "Waka Waka", which has been recorded and performed by Columbian pop artist, Shakira. And we can't forget the unique play on words that was presented of "The Little Red Riding Hood."

"[The students] don't hear that everyday. But, I think it's important for them to know; that's where they come from," said Schonbachler.

It was clear that the singers in the choirs love performing and had all the energy of, well, high school students. They even created a farewell tunnel outside while singing to the elementary students. I would say the elementary students learned something today. Not only does a song have music and words, but it also has passion.

A special thanks to the Valpo Schools Foundation, Inc. for their generous funding of the Young People's Concerts through their Creative Learning And Special Projects (CLASP) award!
