Viking-Sports-Report-Week-of-March-2-10-2018The gymnastics team scored a season high 113.7 to take second at the Sectional. The Vikes had solid performances throughout the meet, with highlights including Jenna Algozine winning Uneven Bars (9.625), Rachel Moneta on Beam (9.55, 3rd), Whitney McKeon and Moneta 4th and 6th All-Around, Lizzy Wilson on Vault (9.65, 3rd) and floor (9.6, 2nd), Megan Wagenblast on Beam (9.2), and Sabrina Falk on Vault (9.05). The Vikings are ranked #2 in the State and will host the Regional meet Saturday at 1:00 in the Main Gym. At stake is a trip to the State Finals at Ball State University. Come on out in your Viking green and help our team "Make it Happen!”

The Vikettes won first place and grand champions in the dance division at the Hoosier Open Cheer and Dance Competition this past weekend. Senior Julia Amones also placed second in the Senior Jump Off.

The Cheerleaders won first place in the co-Ed division at the Hoosier Open Cheer and Dance Championships this past weekend. Senior Kelsey McCotter also placed third in the Senior Jump-off. Congratulations to Madison Daniels for placing second in the cheer scholarship division.

The boy's swim team competed at the IHSAA state meet this past weekend and finished in 17th place as a team. Ryan Hrosik earned the 4th place medal in the 50 yard freestyle and 16th in the 100 Butterfly. Sam Behrend also competed in the 100 butterfly and placed 18th. Jack Schwartz dove a great meet and placed 13th overall. Cole St. Aubin competed in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and placed, 15th and 24th respectively. The 200 freestyle relay of Cole St. Aubin, Will Miltenberger, Ryan Hrosik, and Sam Behrend finished 12th with a time of 1:26.80. Great job on a great season boys!

The boys’ basketball team finished their regular season this past Friday evening by travelling to South Bend Clay. The JV won 72-32. Tommy Cavanaugh, Logan Mersman and Peyton Krutz led the way with 13 points each. Krutz added 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Tommy Cavanaugh dished out 4 assists. Brandon Mack scored 10 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Collins added 7 points and John Hofer dished out 3 assists. The JV finished the season 20-1. It was the third consecutive 20 win season. Job well done! The Varsity defeated Clay 74-34. Brandon Newman scored 26 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Nathan Aerts added 12 points. CJ Opperman scored 9 points. Colton Jones and Cooper Jones pulled down 4 rebounds each. Collin Walls dished out 5 assists. The Varsity finished their regular season 17-5 and Co-Duneland Athletic Conference Champs with a 6-1 record.

On Wednesday they took on Portage in the first round of the IHSAA Sectional. They defeated the Indians 63-46. Brandon Newman led the scoring with 21 points and 6 rebounds followed by Nate Aerts with 16 points. Charlie Healy had a balanced game with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Jake Evans dished out 3 assists and Colin Walls added 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Next up is a match up against Michigan City in the second game on Friday night for a chance to play in the championship game on Saturday. Chesterton takes on Merrillville in the first game Friday at 6:00.

The Valparaiso High School football team hosted a mock-signing for six members of the senior class on Wednesday. The student-athletes were Jake Leffew- University of Indianapolis, Michael Scarsella- Valparaiso University, Adrian Guzman-Valparaiso University, Riley Woodward- Wabash College, John Hruska- Rose-Hulman, and Joey McIntyre- North Park University.

The girls’ track team opened their competitive season last night with limited event indoor triangular meet against Chesterton and Michigan City last night. Here are the top two finishers for Valparaiso and their results. In high Jump sophomore Jordan Coplan placed 1st with a personal best of 5' 0 and freshman Claire Lopez finished 3rd. In shot put senior Mary Johnson placed 1st and sophomore Olivia Zell 2nd. In long Jump senior Bridget McGrath was 2nd and sophomore Grace Bonczyk was 5th. In pole vault sophomore Anastasia Tsagris was 2nd and freshman Bella Grisafi 3rd. In the 55 m hurdles freshman Precious Harvey took 2nd and junior Adrianna McFadden was 3rd. In the 55 m dash freshman Bella Grisafi was 3rd and freshman Precious Harvey was 4th.
