Vikings Take Top Two Spots as Girls XC Team Secures Sectional Title

Congratulations to the Valparaiso High School Girls Cross Country team for their WIN at Sectionals! Chesterton hosted sectionals at Sunset Hill Farm on Oct. 11, 2011.

The top five schools from Sectionals move on to the Regionals meet this Saturday held at New Prairie. Valparaiso took first with 30 points followed by Portage 60, New Prairie 73, Chesterton 90 and LaPorte with 130 points rounding out the top 5. Also competing Michigan City 151, Wheeler 158, South Central (no team score), Washington Township ( no team score) and Westville (no team score).

With 5 of their Varsity runners placing in the top 15 this was an easy victory for Valpo. Katelyn DeVries and Alison Mundell took 1st and 2nd.

On her 1st place Sectional Championship, DeVries said, "I am excited to win. I definitely am where I wanted to be this time." Starting the season off with a stress fracture and not knowing if she would be able to compete at all this year, DeVries added, "We weren't sure where I would be this year, but I am happy. I am looking forward to Regionals. That is always a fun race."

Coach Nellesen comented on DeVries performance by saying, "She saved it until the end, way to go Katelyn!" He added, "It was a good team effort and they all really ran well."

Alison Mundell, proud of her 2nd place positon, said, "I am really excited about our win and I hope our team does well at Regionals."
